There were over 100 million people watching the championship with a peak of 44 million concurrent viewers during the final round of the tournament. There were teams from 13 different regions around the world, and the matches were broadcasted in 16 different languages. That just shows the global impact that the game has as well as the developers catering to those different markets. They could of easily just appealed to their biggest markets, but from a revenue stand point as well as just brand inclusion they wanted everyone to be belt o experience the championship. The game is 10 years old, but it is still one of the most played video game titles in the world. At peak hours, more than 8 million people are logged on, and playing the game on a daily basis.

The game is at the top of its class and the next closet title would be Fortnite. League of Legends has been able to grow due to the constant community engagement and partnerships that expand the franchises recognizable characters beyond the gaming industry. The tournaments do not offer as much prize money as other games like Fortnite, but it provides stability for professional players. Players in the most successful regional leagues earn annual salaries as well as other benefits from their teams.

Facebook Says They Are Able To Locate Users Who Decline Tracking

It seems like every week there is something new involving facebook and privacy. The company had admitted in a letter to two US senators that they able to locate someone even after they opt out of precise location tracking. Facebook had stopped tracking location data when users specifically opt out of the service, but there are other forms of information and data that they are able to use to piece together where someone is. The company says that there are several benefits as to why they need your location for advertisements and to fight hackers and battle misinformation but that is still crazy. There really is no privacy any more it seems like and all these big companies are simply sharing our data for money. That is pretty concerning to me and im sure a lot of other Americans that we can check the option to not have our location tracked but it still is. I wonder how many other options and services that I decline from, but are still being done without my knowledge…

Netflix Will Potentially “Super Bundle” To Survive

There is a new report on streaming from Interpublic Groups Magna that assess Netflix and Quibi as being vulnerable in this accelerating streaming wars. With many big players going the industry, the report forecasts that media companies will create content super bundles to keep viewers. Streaming isn’t going anywhere, and all businesses small and large are going to continue to have to find innovative ways to stay afloat. In 2020, report estimates that streaming will make up 60% of all video viewing next year, and 70% by 2024. It is going to become the most dominate mode of video consumption for some audiences in 2020, eclipsing linear TV. Even powerhouses like Netflix will need to reevaluate because according to Nielsen data, Netflix’s most viewed offerings during the 2018-2019 season were Disney titles. Now that Disney has since taken back those tittles and added more of their own into their own streaming service that will really shake up the tables. Netflix will need to do more if they want to continue to be the top dog in streaming.

The 1st Annual Apple Music Awards. . .

apple-music-awards

The first ever Apple Music Awards took place on December 4th, 2019. The award show  streamed on Apple Music from the Steve Jobs theater in Cupertino, California. The show awarded the most popular artists of 2019. The award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year went to Lizzo, who had a number one song on the chart with “Truth Hurts”; Song of the Year was awarded to Lil Nas X for his hit song’ Old Town Road’. However, the biggest winner of the night was Billie Eilish who has graced the year with one of the top-selling pop albums. Eilish took home the award for ‘most streamed artist’.

Apple has had a very interesting year. The media giant released their newest iPhone (iPhone 11) and on November 12th they delivered their Apple streaming service which has had a ton of success. This award show does raise a few eyebrows due to how quickly it came after the announcement of the Spotify music awards. What makes both of these award shows interesting is that they give the awards out by determining who has the most streams. This week the Billboard charts announced that they will count YouTube streams toward the Billboard 200 chart as well.

It is clear that times are changing and the internet/ music world is finding more ways to adapt to the world of streaming.

Innovative powerhouse Coca-Cola is at it again with a new CMO

Known as one of the most innovative companies in the world, Coca-Cola is changing up their marketing strategy yet again with the reinstatement of a global CMO.

With 130 years of business under their belt, Coca-Cola transformed themselves from a globally successful soft drink company to a globally successful media company with the implementation of innovative marketing strategies. This includes their iconic branding campaigns that have cultivated the highest brand loyalty of any product. Wendy Clark was the Senior Vice President of Integrated Marketing Communications and Capabilities from 2008-2016. Now, there is a new sheriff in town.

In May 2017, as part of their innovative marketing strategy, Coca-Cola ditched the position of Chief Marketing Officer and created the title “chief growth officer instead”. This position has been held by company Senior Vice President Francisco Crespo since 2017, who will be stepping down from the position in 2020.

To replace Crespo, Coca-Cola is reinstating the CMO position to, again, replace the new Chief Growth Officer position. Company veteran Manolo Arryo will be assuming the global Chief Marketing Officer position in 2020.

Hallmark Pulled in Two Directions

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hallmark-ads/hallmark-reverses-position-on-same-sex-couple-ads-after-public-outcry-idUSKBN1YJ0OF

After an uproar over Hallmark’s same-sex couple commercial advertising the wedding registry and planning website Zola, Hallmark pulls the ad off the air. Now, they are reversing their position.

This past Sunday, Hallmark’s CEO Mike Perry publicly apologized for the companies’ retraction of a wedding planning and registry website commercial for Zola. The advertisement depicted the happy wedding of a same-sex female couple to advertisement the brand, which sparked outcry of one conservative group in particular: One Million Moms.

One Million Moms reached out to Crown Family Networks (parent company of Hallmark) CEO Bill Abbott claiming in protest that the advertisement was in poor taste, “distracting”, and pressured the company to pull the commercial off-air. Abbott responded to the group claiming the advertisement aired “in error” and would be pulled immediately.

After the decision to pull the ad was made public, this also prompted outrage from many, including Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, Ellen DeGeneres, and streaming company Netflix. It also sparked a skit from Saturday Night Live depicting a Hallmark dating show, poking fun at the channel for its homophobic actions.

As of current, Hallmark is working with Zola to renew their partnership and reinstate the advertisements on the channel.

TikTok Launches New Music Streaming Service

The logo of TikTok, a short-form video-sharing app that has proved wildly popular in 2018 and 2019

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is trialing a new music streaming app called Resso to rival Apple Music and Spotify. This new app is being trialed in India and Indonesia, two markets that are potentially untapped by the American companies. While this app has been trialed for 6 months, it was only recently revealed that it was TikTok’s parent company was actually the owner.

ByteDance has had a lot of success with their app TikTok accumulating 500 million users since its launch in 2016. Resso has 27,000 users which is clearly a huge difference. Despite this difference, ByteDance is finding new ways to integrate TikTok mechanics into this new app. One feature included is swiping to skip a song, a feature very familiar on TikTok as users scroll through videos. The app is also a lot more communal, making it easier to share, comment, and create gifs using certain songs on the platform. The company has been rumored to be talking with the major music labels like Sony Music, Warner Music, and NBCUniversal to bring as many songs as possible when it drops in the US.

This article is interesting because the  company is looking into untapped markets internationally. In addition to that, I wonder how this will affect music streaming. TikTok is a very fast paced platform where people consume 15 seconds of content until the video is over, which makes me wonder if music will be the same way. I find that apps like TikTok lower attention spans for consuming content, and I wonder of this will make music more interesting in the beginning to ensure people listen to the entire song. Either way, the effects of this new competitor will be interesting.

Netflix’s New Marketing Strategy

Image result for scoops ahoy baskin robbins

One of the main benefits of Netflix is being able to watch your favorite shows uninterrupted by ads. While this is great for consumers, Netflix is clearly missing out on the potential revenue that other platforms can benefit from like Hulu. Despite 158 million global subscribers, Netflix is in a whopping 12 billion dollars in debt. Not only that, being able to compete in the digital market is becoming more and more difficult as new networks launch their own streaming platforms. Because of this, Netflix has looked to a different strategy to make more money.

As Netflix resists commercials, they are finding new ways to work with brands to promote their shows. Last month, Netflix worked with Subway, a sandwich fast food chain, to serve Green Eggs and Ham sub (spinach-dyed eggs, sliced ham, guacamole, cheese) to promote their new show Green Eggs and Ham based off the book by Dr. Seuss. Earlier in the summer, Netflix converted a Baskin’ Robins into a Scoops Ahoy to promote season 3 of Stranger Things. By integrating these shows into shops Netflix hopes to get more people to subscribe to the service. “We believe we will have a more valuable business in the long term,” Netflix said, “by staying out of competing for ad revenue and instead entirely focusing on competing for viewer satisfaction.”

According to reports Netflix has been actively beefing up their marketing department and becoming more flexible with the other brands they work with. Even though this seems like a great idea, I find this counterproductive to Netflix’s problem. While I think this is a genius marketing tool to get people excited about the shows, the bottom line is that Netflix is in debt by a lot of money, and until they know for sure t’s increasing subscriber counts, this almost seems like gimmicks. I feel as though product placement could be a lot more sustainable because the bottom line is Netflix needs money and marketing will only get you so far.

New Age Thievery

When someone tells us they were robbed, we usually imagine they got their wallet, phone, or even car stolen. In this case, yes, a car was broken into. Though, this burglar did not cause the loss of just one person’s belongings, but instead, 29,000 Facebook employees.

The robber used their conniving little hands to steal a Facebook payroll employee’s unencrypted hard drive, via car break-in. On this hard drive contains thousands of Facebook employees’ personal information that’ve been hired since 2018, including their “bank account numbers, employee names, the last four digits of their social security numbers, their salaries, bonuses, and equity details” (Lee, 2019).

Despite the hard drive’s absence of Facebook user data (lucky for us), this still raised the question as to how safe is this company keeping our private information? We’re not so hopeful, based on previous privacy scandals (it even took them over a month to alert employees of this incident in particular).

In order to alleviate concern, Facebook is offering its affected employees a 2-year subscription to an identity theft protection service. Though, we are still left in the dark about are few things. 1) What is the robbers’ intention for stealing the hard drives? 2) Why was this hard drive in an employee’s car in the first place? and 3) Why was the hard drive unencrypted?

Facebook claims we have nothing to worry about but considering their history of carelessness with their users’ private information, I believe alarm is warranted. This story reminded me that any of us who use the internet have much more at stake than just what we carry on our person. Maybe we should practice the same diligent protection we have over our private information as we do with our phone and wallet.
