Sony & Marvel Split Over Spider Man

spidermanSpider Man will always be one of the world’s favorite super heroes but it might be a while before we see him in movies again. According to WION, the Sony-Marvel relationship has split due failing to reach an agreement over co-financing. Marvel, which is a part of the Disney family has produced the previous two Spider Man movies and after last year’s successful release of the movie, Disney wanted to share co-financing on the future films and Sony preferred to keep the agreement the way it was for the other movies.

Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president states “Unless a deal is reached, Holland will not appear in any future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and no Marvel characters will appear in Holland’s solo films”. The relationship between Sony and Marvel several years ago when Marvel made the decision to help produce Sony’s Spider Man movies and it also opened the door for the new Sony Spider Man character to appear in Marvel movies.

Even though Marvel produced the Sony Spider Man movie, Sony owns the film rights. Who is right in this situation? It is unfortunate that the relationship between these two media giants has come to an end because the Sony Spider Man character has captured the hearts of the new Marvel generation but Anthony Russo, director of Sony spider Man said it best “it’s complicated.

Facebook Cracks Down on Self-Harm and Suicide Content: A Step Towards Prevention

In light of National Suicide Prevention Week which began on Sunday September 8th, social media giant Facebook has actively promoted its mission to act as a force for good towards suicide and self-harm. The company announced yesterday that it will no longer be allowing graphic cutting images and other forms of self-harm content on its platform. Additionally, Facebook will also be cracking down on the uploading/sharing of this kind of material on Instagram as well.

The company wants to avoid unintentionally advertising or triggering struggling individuals with this kind of content, and believes it a key step towards a brighter future online. Since 2006, Facebook has made multiple policies and content restrictions in efforts to address the existence of suicide in society as many have claimed social media to be an “echo chamber” for negativity.

Going deeper into content restriction, Facebook and Instagram have been using an AI-based set of suicide prevention tools which was introduced in 2017. Some of these tools include “sensitivity screens” that operate in situations such as blurring out healed self-harm cuts that are posted to avoid encouraging this kind of behavior in online users.

“We’ve also taken steps to address the complex issue of eating-disorder content on our apps by tightening our policy to prohibit additional content that may promote eating disorders” (Antigone Davis).  Davis recently revealed in an interview that the company is also in the process of hiring a health and well-being expert to its safety-policy team to focus on supporting the community online.

Although this is an example of large social media companies driving positive change in the online community, I feel as though it is important to remember why some of this negative content is being posted/viewed by groups of people in the first place. It’s almost as if Facebook is trying to repair an issue it essentially created. Suicide and self-harm is a growing problem in our nation and social media has taken a large role in this. While it is important and respectable that these companies are putting efforts towards creating awareness and change online to help others, to what extent should we blame Facebook for these consequences in the first place? Does the blame fall completely upon the user for generating/sharing self-harming content that may trigger others, or the platform itself? Is Facebook’s push to put an end to this negative content enough?

Welcome Back, Flip Phones

2019 is starting to look a lot like the new 2009.

Once upon a time, in a land before Apple, there was Nokia, the queen of feature phones. Who could ever forget how awesome it was to walk around with your sliding, twisting, flippy cell phone? “Nokia” in the early 2000’s is as defining of a word to a generation as “Instagram” is today (Okay, that’s a stretch. You get my point). But seriously, whipping a sleek flip phone out of your pocket a decade ago was a sure easy way to up your cool factor.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, she’s back. And she’s cooler than ever.

Nokia just announced their flip phone comeback, which will be a revamped version of their original Nokia 2720 Fold. The new Nokia 2720 is obviously entering a highly competitive market with the majority of Americans having either iPhone’s or Androids. With the rise of the internet and instant gratification expectations over the last decade, who could imagine having a flip phone today? This is why Nokia created their 2720 model equipped with 4G internet and application capabilities such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Maps.

Another fairly recent trend seems to be the growing angst and distrust consumers are having with Apple products. It is becoming obvious that iPhone’s are not meant to last for years – just until the next iPhone comes out. Our society has become so attached to these devices that we have no choice but to comply with Apples purposeful software malfunctions and fork up over $500 for a new phone every two or so years. According to Florian Seiche, the CEO of the company who makes Nokia phones, people are placing more importance on having their phones longer, and they should benefit from doing so.

Another huge benefit is obviously the price tag on these new innovative flip phones. If I can essentially carry out the essential tasks of my iPhone, not have to replace my broken glass screen every two months, and get to revel in early 2000’s nostalgia every day, ALL for $600 cheaper?! Sign me up, Nokia. I’ll see you at Blockbuster with my Tamagotchi.

What does #BoycottMulan mean for the film’s box market success?

Currently, there’s been a significant increase in criticism from international human right groups concerning the ways in which police are handling confrontations between protesters and the public in Hong Kong, China.

Celebrities are quite notorious for taking to social media to speak out against police brutality, and social issues in general. A little while back, Crystal Liu Yifei, – the actress who will be starring in Disney’s live action version of Mulan, posted a message of support for the Hong Kong police force over Chinese social media. Her post then ignited a wave controversy, and attracted the attention of those in Hong Kong as well as pro-democracy sympathizers from other parts of the world, prompting a #boycottmulan campaign on twitter.

According to wikipedia, Liu’s godfather is Chen Jinfe , the Chairman of Beijing Tongchan Investment Group, so it comes as no surprise that she would be in support of the mainland’s interests.

One of Disney’s intents with the film Mulan is to attract Chinese audiences, and although some may think the actresses comments will dampen Disney’s success with China, it is important to remember that Hong Kong’s box market makes up only a small percentage of Disney’s box market worth in China.

That being said, many of those in the Weste are quite aware of what’s going on in China, support the protests, and are thus, are equally bothered by the actress’s comments. For instance, a quick look up of #boycottMulan on Tumblr’s search engine alone demonstrates that there are a handful of potential viewers in the US who’ve been put off of seeing Disney’s Live Action Mulan precisely because of the actresses comments.

I think if anything Liu’s comments has resulted in bad publicity for the film, though the full extent I think it’ll have on Mulan in terms of the film’s success in the West, is still something I remain unsure of.

Tool on Top

Tool’s “Fear Inoculum” debuted at No. 1 with the equivalent of 270,000 sales in the United States.

In today’s music environment, the charts are topped with the same music year after year. A mix of pop music from Taylor Swift or a new album from Rhianna, the formula stays the same for the most part but that changed with the release of Tool’s new album “Fear Inoculum”. The first album in 13 years from the rock and roll band has seen them over take the number one spot from Taylor Swift’s album “Lover”.

Tool’s new album also marked a new venture for the band. After years of not using streaming services or any other kind of digital platform, moved to digital means.By releasing their entire discography online at the same time as their new album has created a media spectacle that the billboard can not look away from. “Fear Inoculum” came in after just one week with 270,000 sales in the US with 88,000 of them being super deluxe editions that include a small 4 inch HD display that shows never before seen footage of the band. A new exciting twist on the already incredibly popular deluxe edition sales. The album saw 160,000 downloads and 27.6 million streams of their songs. Although these numbers are not as big as pop or hip hop streaming numbers they are a huge increase in the rock and roll market. This increase in streams shows that rock and roll can still bring it, even in 2019.

Beware of “SIM Swapping”

In the highlight of Jack Dorsey’s (CEO of Twitter) recent Twitter hack, many people are on the fence about their privacy when it comes to social media platforms. Recently, hackers were able to get access to the CEO’s Twitter account for nearly twenty minutes. According to Twitter, “Hackers had gained access to Dorsey’s profile by effectively stealing his mobile phone number, which was compromised due to a “security oversight” by the carrier.” Shortly after this event actress, Chole Moretz also faced the same issue with her Twitter account.

So, the question being asked is, “How is this possible?” CNBC says, “a scammer who has obtained the phone number and other personal information of someone else calls a wireless carrier pretending to be the victim and requests that number be transferred to a new SIM card. If successful with the impersonation, which could include providing the birth date or the mother’s maiden name, the user can start logging into various services, like Twitter, and changing passwords.” After this has taken place scammers could potentially tap into bank accounts and create issues many people may fear. Some companies are requiring other versions of authenticators such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator rather than SMS for better security on their accounts. Although, some fear that this may not be “enough” to stop the rising issue. Some mobile companies are also being found responsible due to employees distributing account information to scammers in exchange for a pay-off.

Next Stop Retaliation Station: Google’s Poisonous Work Environment

Image: https://www.hrtechnologynews.com/news/workforce-management/the-science-behind-googles-workplace-culture/99131

20,000 Google employees made the brave decision to conduct a walkout about a year ago to protest the mishandling of reports of sexual harassment and misconduct. It seems as though to this day not much has changed for those brave enough to speak out against the wrong doings. While Google seemed to say the right things and make the right moves publicly, changing there old polices to be more updated and making a public statement about the reports, behind the scenes employees are accusing the company of having a “retaliation culture”, which has made past and present employees too fearful to report any issues.

As reported by Recode, they found out numerous employees were punished for their actions with demotions, being pushed out, or made to work on lesser important or coveted projects after filing complaints with HR. The company would rather sweep issues under the rug than face the controversy head on, and this mentality is applied to a range of issues including everything from sexual misconduct to security. While employees have begin to voice their concerns about the retaliation, more often than not Google is loosing these employees because of this major issue.

I always find it puzzling that these larger companies would rather mistreat and belittle their employees rather than listen and work with them. I truly think they only end up hurting their image and credibility in the end, as people like myself hear these reports and stories and have no desire to work for such a place. I think the higher ups in companies like Google don’t understand that the way these situations are handled have a big impact on consumers, it is not like ten-twenty years ago where people don’t care or are ignorant to what is going on, people want to be informed about a companies moral code and values, so this doesn’t paint Google in a flattering light.

Google borrows dating app feature to recommend personalized movies and shows

https://www.techspot.com/news/81785-google-borrows-dating-app-feature-recommend-personalized-movies.html

https://www.engadget.com/2019/09/05/google-search-what-to-watch/

Google decides to use a dating app feature to simplify finding streaming video content of your favorite shows. “Like Tinder, users can swipe left or right to indicate their dislike or like for something. The process will train Google’s algorithms, bringing up more personalized recommendations the next time you ask it to recommend a show or movie.” as stated in the article.

z

Once you pick a recommendation, Google will give all services that provide that show such as how much you rent or buy the program or watch for free from your subscription. Another cool feature of the app will show movies and shows matching them with a term such as horror. You can even search specific genre, documentaries and so on. It also uses Google trends on what type of shows, movies, and documentaries that people are searching online. A useful tool So far, the feature is innovative and not sure if Tinder would get credited for having their feature being used by Google for their streaming content. I do think it is an awesome feature and probably use it.

The image above shows the services that pricing for each provider in regards to This is Us.  The providers range from Google’s Youtube services to Vudu. It gives the consumer a watch option such free, placed on a watch list as well as buying and renting.

According to Engadget, Google has a simple solution to those nights when you just don’t know what to watch: borrow a cue from dating apps. The internet giant has introduced a search feature on mobile that invokes a swipe interface when you search for terms like “what to watch” or “good shows to watch” and tap a start button in the Top Picks For You carousel. You can swipe right to show your approval for a show, or left if you can’t stand it — the more shows you flick through, the better your recommendations become.

You can specify movie genres, periods or even specific activities, such as “horror movies from the ’80s” if you’re in a Nightmare on Elm Street mood. And when you do find something to watch, info cards will display all the services that host a given show. You can specify the ones you use to ensure that recommendations focus on titles that won’t cost extra. This won’t guarantee that you’ll settle on a new must-watch series, but it’ll at least save you from being overwhelmed with choice.

Overall it is a step in the right direction since it simplifies streaming content to ease of use content. It has yet to be seen whether this app will catch on to the mass media and consumer content or it will flop. Success will be determine by those who use it. My only question is regarding the service is Netflix was not added to their search results.

How Microsoft is Leading the Change in Tech and Innovation

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/08/technology/microsoft-brad-smith.html

In the midst of all the topics surrounding data usage and antitrust claims against big conglomerates such as Amazon, Google, and YouTube, there seems to be one big tech company that has avoided a majority of government backlash today–Microsoft.

Although the company is no stranger to facing substantial fines due to its own antitrust claims, Microsoft has found a defensive approach in order to revolutionize its external affairs becoming a leading advocate in public policy matters and ethical settlements aligned with the government.

Microsoft has restructured its external strategy by becoming less of a consumer company through market shifts and a newly defined business plan. For instance, the company has rallied behind the protection of consumer privacy and ordered for more legitimate sanctions in regards to artificial intelligence. Unlike companies today, Microsoft attributes its corporate personality change by not becoming reliant upon online advertising and storing personal data–a headline we are all too familiar with in the current media landscape. The President of Microsoft, Brad Smith, claims that, “when your technology changes the world, you bear a responsibility to help address the world that you have helped create.” The company still undergoes business selling ads but instead compromises with the views of its competitors and policymakers, making a case for bringing tech sectors and government together.

Smith has since marshaled support for the Paris Call for international norms of behavior on the internet and for the Christchurch Call to curb terrorist and extremist content online. These initiatives are without restrictive law, however, Mr. Smith claims they could start global conversations that shape global policy.

Smith notes how the mentality behind the leaders in tech today is to continue to fight, because that is how they made it out to be successful in the first place. However, the more ethical approach is compromise– to reach out and be proactive in confrontational disputes. Microsoft’s has framed a fundamental model all tech companies should follow. To advocate for change in a productive way and make meaningful decisions that positively impact technology and the consumer.

Streaming Services and Physical Media Sales are Working Wonders

Credit: Alesan R. Aboafahe, Canva.

The music industry has been receiving more revenue by constant streamings through apps like Apple Music and Spotify. To be exact, streaming makes up about 80 percent of the industries revenue.

Applications that allow people to stream music are making a revenue of $4.3 billion (Steele, A. 2019). Which is where most of the revenue is contributing from. More and more people are becoming premium members of Spotify or Apple Music and streaming the catchiest songs ranging from Drake, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and so much more.

Music streaming apps are not the only factors contributing to increased revenue for the music industry. Gen Z and Millenials are taking it back to the 90s with trends of vinyl and CDs. CDs made a revenue of around $485 million in about six months and vinyls adding in about $224 million, according to The Verge’s article result (Alexander, J. 2019). I think that these numbers are exciting to see. It shows how popular trends become and how they can make a major difference in specific industries. There is also an art to listening to music through a record player or a CD player, it makes it seem more “aesthetic” as the kids now say. It allows the listener to appreciate and really feel the music. I believe this is important and the numbers will continue to grow because of how influential music can be!
