Amazon Ring Receiving Backlash For Entering Partnerships with Police Forces

Ring, an Amazon’s home surveillance company, has received a lot of backlash for how the company has partnered with over two hundred law enforcement agencies. As a result, Police officers who have partnered with Ring’s Law Enforcement Neighborhood Portal, have access to an interactive map that allows police to request camera footage directly from residents without obtaining a warrant.

Ring, has helped police bundle theft sting operations and assisted police on get their hands on footage without a warrant. Individuals who testify against their neighbors are also gifted free cameras in return. People are fighting and mobilizing against Ring partnerships with Police.

A digital-rights activist group Fight for Our Future, is helping by getting people to demand local governments and police departments to stop making partnerships with Ring. In addition to new regulations, and a congressional investigation into the company, over 30 civil rights groups have signed an open letter to demand an end to Ring’s partnering with law enforcement officials.

Rewound: The App That Can Turn Your I-Phone into an I-Pod Classic

Rewound is a basic music player app that can be found in the App Store of Apple. This app incorporates customization skins that can visually convert an I-Phone into an I-Pod classic.

Part of what makes the app so great is that it synchronizes with an Apple Music library, and includes haptic feedback, which allows it to not only look like an iPod, but sound like one too.  Rewound’s developer, Louis Anslow of Rethought agency, took a year to create the app, of which he claims to have made it with the intent of insinuating some I-Pod nostalgia. Rewound only suports Apple music most, but Anslow claims that it should be able to support Spotify in the future.

“It is an experimental project exploring the blurring lines between the digital and physical world, Edgeless displays with haptic feedback can become any device you wish. Rewound lets users morph their iPhone into a retro 2000s era MP3 player — whatever brand or model they preferred.”

I think apps like this one are great as they can be used to educate and inform of older technology products. For instance, younger individuals who have never used an I-Pod classic, could use this to experience the interface of an apple product which came before their I-Phones.

Venmo Users Reporting Payment Requests From Unknown Spammers

Recently, people have been reported to seeing dozens of requests from strangers on Venmo, both for money and to connect on the app.   The requests ranged from $1 to $100 and seemed to target individuals who had their Venmo accounts set to private. Many of these requests seem to be of fake accounts, with nearly all of them having pictures of women set as the profile pictures.

Many privacy researchers have addressed Venmo’s social strategy as one that’s quite harmful, and Buzzfeed’s article seems to suggest this to be the case behind the incident too. The money-exchange app, which allows individuals to send and receive immediate payments from friends and acquaintances, also functions as a social networking site. Users can make transactions and share minimum details regarding that transaction, all while keeping the payment is kept secret. The details of the transactions ends up on the user’s “news feed”, making it visible to their their “friends”. The layout is somewhat similar to twitter and Facebook’s social media feed, and like these Social Media networking sites, users can engage in social interaction on the application, through making comments using jokes and/or emojiis, and/or likes.  A couple of years ago, a user discovered the venmo account of Trump’s short-lived white house press-secretary Sean Spicer, which led to a bunch of Venmo users going to his account to send send requests for money and toll his account.

Nearly all articles which seem to detail this issue suggest that the only way for an individual to protect themselves against these particular requests is to set their profile to private.

In response to the issue, Venmo put out a statement claiming that the app prohibits harassment and will do what they can to resolve the issue Personally, I think incidents like this one tarnish the image of app companies like Venmo and unprofessional. Although I haven’t received requests from Strangers/spam accounts, I have received requests from spam accounts on Instagram and it is rather annoying.

New CASE Act Makes Fighting Copyright Theft Easier on the Wallet

As of October 22nd, 2019, the CASE (Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement) Act officially passed 410-6 in the House of Representatives. If passed by the Senate, this act will ease the financial burden of enforcing ones rights in terms of copyright theft.

Traditionally, when faced with copyright theft and infringement issues, the process involves hiring an attorney and fronting high legal expenses. This process seems unfair, especially if you were the victim of copyright theft in the first place, and often discourages people from fighting for rights they are entitled to. In many cases, the financial burden that comes along with fighting copyright infringement is far too high for the average creative or everyday person. Ideally, the CASE Act would provide a financially practical way to enforce ones rights without having to hire an expensive attorney, especially for independent creators.

According to The Recording Academy, this monumental act is an incredible victory for music creators specifically, following last years passing of the Music Modernization Act. Daryl Friedman, chief industry, government, & member relations officer for the Recording Academy claims that the CASE Act finally gives music makers access to the copyright protection they deserve.

If the CASE Act passes the Senate for final vote, a copyright claims board will be created within the U.S Copyright Office to rule on small claims infringement where damages will be capped at $15,000 per claim and $30,000 total.

Hulu Rewards Binge Watching

Makers Hulu

Hulu announced recently that they will be introducing a new system of advertising that will reward people for binge watching episodes in one sitting. They packaged it as a reward by offering a special deal through Hulu or allowing the episode to be ad free because of a specific sponsor. Because the Hulu revenue model relies on ads, Hulu is giving an incentive to make the ads more palatable while maintaining support from the advertisers. Hulu announced they will be partnering with advertisers like Kellogg’s, Maker’s March, and Georgia-Specific for this new system.

Hulu will use data on viewers to predict which shows are about to be binge watched and will serve, “contextually relevant messaging from our brand partners that acknowledges a binge-watching session has begun.” For example, Cheez-It Snap’d will show an ad that corresponds with the binge watch session by saying, “Another episode? Snack it to me!”

In 2007, all the major media companies owned a share of Hulu, but now Disney owns a majority of the company. Comcast handed over operational control to Disney and plans to sell 33% of their stock to Disney by 2024.

I find this interesting because I totally agree with this method of advertising. The biggest annoyance when binge watching shows is the constant interruption from advertisements. Personally, I like the idea of getting the longer ad out of the way and experiencing the whole episode uninterrupted instead of short periods that occur every 15 minutes. I think this is a really smart thing and will be very beneficial to the platform. I wonder how the platform will change now that Disney will own Hulu in the future as networks pull the shows, but the new advertisement system is interesting nonetheless.

FTC Cracking down on Facebook… Again

Image result for ftc facebook

Facebook is taking heat again by the US government as it attempts to integrate WhatsApp and Instagram into the Facebook platform. According to various sources, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the federal government’s main business regulator, has been constantly looking over the company’s dominance in the advertising and social media space. This FTC could seek an injunction since Facebook is weaving its platforms together, and the FTC wants to ensure Facebook does not have too much power.

An injunction by the FTC at this point is not considered to be typical behavior because the companies have already merged. In 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram, and in 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp, a very popular messaging app. Mark Zuckerberg, The CEO of Facebook, announced in January that he would like to merge all the platforms to create a more seamless messaging service.

Many critics of Facebook claim the merge is happening to make it harder to break up the company. Senator Richard Blumenthal even commented saying, “The FTC & DOJ cannot continue to leave Facebook’s provocations & anti-competitive conduct unchallenged. Action is overdue.”

I find this article interesting because I find it funny how the FTC is looking into this now. Many traditional media companies merge all the time, yet the FTC is looking very closely at Facebook. I think personally, because of Facebook’s data breach last year, the FTC is concerned with data and privacy rather than the actual merge. If people really had a problem, I wonder why this injunction did not occur sooner since the merge with WhatsApp occurred in 2014. I wonder why the integration of the apps is the problem since the companies merged so long ago.

YouTube Brushes Up on its Harassment Policies.

https://adage.com/article/digital/youtube-outlaws-insults-based-race-gender-expression-and-sexual-orientation-caveats/2221831

In recent news, Youtube has established new regulations on anti-discriminatory policies, removing videos that imply insulting speech towards sexual orientation and race, the company said on Wednesday.

The Google unit has made efforts to clean its site since executives in the past have been accused of making homophobic remarks in their own videos. Matt Halprin, YouTube’s head of trust and safety, commented on the new changes stating that, “We will no longer allow content that maliciously insults someone based on protected attributes such as their race, gender expression, or sexual orientation,” “This applies to everyone, from private individuals, to YouTube creators, to public officials.” Youtube has since responded by removing ads from videos exhibiting derogatory remarks.

However, there are exceptions to the actions YouTube will abide by going forward. The company stated that videos that include harassment language in specific contexts, such as a documentary or a scripted satire, will not be exempted from the new policies. Additionally, clips featuring or discussing powerful people such as “high-profile government officials or CEOs of major multinational corporations” will not be removed.

The new policies and regulations that YouTube will follow reaffirms the company’s workplace culture and strict enforcement towards such delicate cases. I think the decision furthermore enforces how other media companies should similarly follow YouTube’s new direction. Given the lawsuit they faced only a few months ago, YouTube certainly seems motivated in clearing its name and avoiding any further indictments at all cost.

Warner Bros. Announces a Keanu Reeves Double Header

Warner Bros Sets Release Dates For ‘The Matrix’ Sequel, ‘The Flash’ & More; ‘Akira’ Off Schedule

Recently, Warner Bros. has set a variety of new releases to come out within the next couple of years. Highlighting the announcement is led by popular DC Universe films such as The Flash (2022) and Aquaman , but the article most notably highlights a good ole fashion box office weekend duel between a pair of surefire Keanu Reeves blockbusters.

On May 21st, 2021, Warner Bros. will be releasing both The Matrix 4 and John Wick with pure Keanu vision. The decision is interesting considering the height of each film’s release. The last Matrix film to hit theaters dates back all the way to 2003 and that comes along with bad baggage and a poor reception from both audiences and critics. Over the years, not many moviegoers have been saying, “when’s the next Matrix film going to come out?” While some die hard fans may be excited, it isn’t necessarily the most popular IP to attract viewers to the theater today given the hype around the MCU and Disney as of late.

However, Keanu Reeves has surprisingly grown an odd fascination to him from fans as the John Wick films have seemed to gradually amused audiences. The third installment nearly made more in one weekend than the second film did in its entire run in theaters and also more than 50% in the world wide box office.

There is one thing that is for sure, Warner Bros. won’t have to worry about filling in people in the theaters on May 21st. However, the financial success of the film’s individually is certainly in jeopardy. The way I see it, John Wick will win the weekend as Matrix 4 will not make as much as they’d hope. The best thing for Warner Bros. to do is simply push back Matrix 4 to a late summer release. This makes audiences excited for another Keanu film later in the season, having another weekend for himself and riding high on the hype of John Wick 4.

FCC won’t punish Verizon and T-Mobile for exaggerating their coverage maps

FCC Officials Testify Before House Energy And Commerce CommitteeThe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) conducted an investigation on Verizon, T-Mobile, and US Cellular. The FCC staff ran speed and coverage tests in rural areas around the country to assess whether consumers in these areas were receiving sufficient download speeds. The FCC concluded that Verizon and T-Mobile over-exaggerated their 4G coverage maps to trick current customers as well as potential customers into believing 4G and fast downloading speeds were available in their area. Staff were unable to receive any 4G signal in 21.3% of T-Mobile’s tests and 16.2% of Verizon’s tests.

In the report the FCC said “Overstating mobile broadband coverage misleads the public and can misallocate our limited universal service funds, and thus it must be met with meaningful consequences.” They also recommended that they assemble a team to ensure the accuracy of mobile broadband maps. T-Mobile stood by its maps but said that they agree with the fact that there is room to improve their procedures and coverage maps.

The FCC will not be punishing the mobile carriers at all because they could not find a “sufficiently clear violation”. Instead, they will send out an advisory reminder to the entire industry that they could be punished for exaggerating their coverage maps. The commission also decided to drop it’s $4.5 billion Mobility Fund due to the overstated coverage maps discovered.

TikTok Continues to Refine Content Policies in Response to Various Concerns

TikTok is certainly the up and coming platform, and is a perfect marketing tool to reach younger audiences. However, because of its appeal to a younger generation, there are potential issues with content moderation and policies as it moves to the mainstream social media sector.

An alarming discovery was made about a policy that limited the reach of content posted by users with disabilities, including users with autism, down syndrome, or facial defects. This was an attempt to protect said users who are “more susceptible to harassment and cyberbullying”, however, it made their content reach a much smaller audience on purpose. TikTok claims this was in response to bullying on the app, however, it was then discovered the same policy/algorithm was applied to videos of users who appeared to be “self-confident and overweight, or homosexual”. This problematic policy was in place until September this year.

Other problematic regulations came from the app’s owners and bosses in China. This included a user being suspended for posting videos condemning the Chinese government’s oppression of Muslims. There have also been concerns raised by Australia’s Strategic Policy Institute, claiming TikTok has been used to further Beijing’s political agenda. Questions have been raised about the platform’s ability to succeed while under the strict Chinese content regulations, and these problematic implications.

The application has dismissed its claims of censorship as miscommunication or misunderstandings, but the examples are undeniable. TikTok has repeatedly claimed the US-based content is independent, however if this is true, there needs to be solid documentation supporting it is not governed by Chinese regulations, and that posts will not be taken down or tampered with.
